Year 5 Parliament House Excursion

Our Year 5 students recently had the opportunity to visit Parliament House! During their visit, they participated in a guided tour exploring the Senate and the House of Representatives, gaining firsthand insight into the workings of our democracy.

A highlight of the day was their session with the Parliamentary Education Office, where students became young parliamentarians in a mock debate to pass a bill in the House of Representatives. The proposed bill? That all schools should include three hours of PE every day!

With passionate speeches, clever arguments, and some impressive attempts to sway the crossbench, the "government" secured victory. The bill was passed, to the excitement of the students, who discovered the power of persuasive communication and collaboration.

Foster Positive Relations

Posted on 14 Aug 2024

Bullying. No Way!

This year Hawker School is participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action, 12 to 16 August 2024.

The theme for this year's campaign is Everyone belongs. This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.

For more information about Bullying No Way Week and bullying prevention, visit the Bullying No Way website.

During the week we will be engaging students in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at promoting empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support. You can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to have this discussion.

We’d like to thank all those who helped make the stall possible - our wonderful teachers and staff for being supportive and helpful; everyone in Preschool for running their own mini stall; and all the awesome people who helped with sorting and pricing the gifts, setting up and running the stall and also making handmade items: Sara, Lucy, Alana, Damien, James, Geoff, Diana, Saranya, Nicky and Diana's Mum.

Finally, thank you to all the families who supported the stall - we made a profit of $1,247!  We hope you all had a great Mother’s Day.

Chief Minister Reading Challenge

Every year, tens of thousands of students across the ACT participate in the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. The Challenge aspires to allow every young person in the ACT to discover the joy reading can bring.

Hawker School is proud to have 366 children registered in the Challenge. Students are challenged to read (or have read to them) 15/30 books by the 3rd of July. We are grateful for the support of the event sponsor, Paperchain Bookstore Manuka.

Each class at Hawker School has a form to fill in with their read books. Students in Preschool to Year 2 have their lists coordinated by their class teachers. Students in Years 3 to 6 have individual forms on their Google Classroom. For more information, chat to class teachers, our Teacher Librarian Jennifer Holland, or go to: Chief Minister Reading Challenge.

Student Voice

Violet and Elke, two of our amazing Year 5 students spoke to the whole school at the assembly on Friday about the importance of keeping our environment free of rubbish. This is a great example of student voice at Hawker. Violet wrote a persuasive letter to Ms Reid about the possibility of addressing the students at a school assembly about rubbish and the impact it has on the environment. Both Violet and Elke met with Ms Reid and Ms Eisenberg to discuss how they would like to deliver their message. Well done Violet and Elke for caring about environment.

Mental Health Awareness Month/ Mental Health Day

Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated each year in the month of October and coincides with World Mental Health Day (10th October). The official theme for 2023, ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right’, encourages all of us to think about our own mental health and also that of those around us.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in Mental Health and Wellbeing lessons each week. It is vital for students to learn about skills and attitudes to help them understand their different emotions and become more resilient. At Hawker, we recognise the importance of building a positive sense of self and supporting our mental health everyday.

Our Hawker representatives provided an entertaining day of basketball for their spectators. The girls used great initiative in their training and prepared well for the competition. The last game had spectators on the edge of their seats as the team came from behind to claim an incredible victory and win the grand final. The team will now represent the Northside in the ACT finals early in Term 4. Thanks to Wayne Lacey for providing intelligent coaching and a calm demeanour when it was needed most! Thanks also to Peta Golledge for taking on the role of scorekeeper for the day.

Division 2:

What an amazing effort from this team! Some of the girls had participated in this competition previously and took on a mentoring role with great results. All girls showed development through the training and game experience and should be proud of their achievements. A couple of convincing wins were a bonus! It is great to see these girls practising consistently  at lunchtimes as next year’s competition will come around quickly.

We appreciated the support from families of students in both teams who were able to be there for part or all of the day.

The Brave Program

We have had quite an uncertain couple of years. This combined with the end of term approaching, can often bring about different emotions and feelings amongst students. BRAVE Self-Help is an interactive, online prevention and intervention program for youth anxiety. BRAVE teaches cognitive behavioural strategies to manage anxiety and worry, through a program of 4 to 10 sessions (depending on the age level). Each session builds on information and strategies learnt in the previous session, and aims to help young people manage anxiety. There are also parent sessions to help parents to better manage their anxious child. The BRAVE for Young Children is completely parent focused.

Our school parents and citizen association (P&C) is a fun and involved group of people. Joining the P&C is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the corporate life of the school and make new friends. Currently The P&C is working towards hosting its first fete in many years. They are keen to hear from people who would be interested in helping out. Please feel free to contact the P&C and find out ways you can participate.
