Year 5 Parliament House Excursion
Our Year 5 students recently had the opportunity to visit Parliament House! During their visit, they participated in a guided tour exploring the Senate and the House of Representatives, gaining firsthand insight into the workings of our democracy.
A highlight of the day was their session with the Parliamentary Education Office, where students became young parliamentarians in a mock debate to pass a bill in the House of Representatives. The proposed bill? That all schools should include three hours of PE every day!
With passionate speeches, clever arguments, and some impressive attempts to sway the crossbench, the "government" secured victory. The bill was passed, to the excitement of the students, who discovered the power of persuasive communication and collaboration.

Bullying. No Way!
This year Hawker School is participating in the Bullying No Way: National week of action, 12 to 16 August 2024.
The theme for this year's campaign is Everyone belongs. This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.
For more information about Bullying No Way Week and bullying prevention, visit the Bullying No Way website.
During the week we will be engaging students in meaningful discussions and activities aimed at promoting empathy, understanding, and respect for diversity. We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support. You can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to have this discussion.

Chief Minister Reading Challenge
Every year, tens of thousands of students across the ACT participate in the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. The Challenge aspires to allow every young person in the ACT to discover the joy reading can bring.
Hawker School is proud to have 366 children registered in the Challenge. Students are challenged to read (or have read to them) 15/30 books by the 3rd of July. We are grateful for the support of the event sponsor, Paperchain Bookstore Manuka.
Each class at Hawker School has a form to fill in with their read books. Students in Preschool to Year 2 have their lists coordinated by their class teachers. Students in Years 3 to 6 have individual forms on their Google Classroom. For more information, chat to class teachers, our Teacher Librarian Jennifer Holland, or go to: Chief Minister Reading Challenge.

Student Voice
Violet and Elke, two of our amazing Year 5 students spoke to the whole school at the assembly on Friday about the importance of keeping our environment free of rubbish. This is a great example of student voice at Hawker. Violet wrote a persuasive letter to Ms Reid about the possibility of addressing the students at a school assembly about rubbish and the impact it has on the environment. Both Violet and Elke met with Ms Reid and Ms Eisenberg to discuss how they would like to deliver their message. Well done Violet and Elke for caring about environment.

At Hawker, we recognise the importance of building a positive sense of self and supporting our mental health everyday.

The Brave Program
We have had quite an uncertain couple of years. This combined with the end of term approaching, can often bring about different emotions and feelings amongst students. BRAVE Self-Help is an interactive, online prevention and intervention program for youth anxiety. BRAVE teaches cognitive behavioural strategies to manage anxiety and worry, through a program of 4 to 10 sessions (depending on the age level). Each session builds on information and strategies learnt in the previous session, and aims to help young people manage anxiety. There are also parent sessions to help parents to better manage their anxious child. The BRAVE for Young Children is completely parent focused.

Our staff participate in regular professional learning during staff meetings. Earlier this term, we had the pleasure of working with Libby Baker on the topic of Functional Grammar. Libby is a literacy consultant as well as a teacher in our system The workshop included exploring and understanding some key components of functional grammar and ways to implement this as part of the literacy program. It was a hands-on workshop where staff explored registers, clauses and what constitutes a clause and then used quality picture books to identify these key components.
Another fantastic professional learning our teachers have participated in this term is a session on teaching handwriting presented online by Sheena Cameron. This workshop focused on developing fine motor skills, teaching handwriting and supporting older students with handwriting issues. Fluent handwriting supports:
- Fine motor skills
- Learning letters (names and sounds)
- Spelling
- Reading and memory
- Writing (content and quality)
