Hawker School Music Program
At Hawker School, each class receives one 45 minute lesson per week. The beginning of each music session welcomes students through singing, a process which allows them to settle into a different classroom environment that has no desks or chairs. Older students may start the lesson with a game focussing on a particular skill, such as keeping a steady beat whilst singing or playing a rhythm or ostinato.
Students learn repertoire taken from a wide range of cultures and styles, and our music classroom is filled with xylophones, Boomwhackers and unpitched percussion instruments. Movement and solfege hand signs are incorporated into lessons to consolidate awareness of the fundamental skills of beat, rhythm, tempo and pitch.
