Principal Message

I am delighted to welcome you to Hawker School Community!

Hawker School is situated in Belconnen in the north of the Australian Capital Territory. Our school includes an onsite preschool campus for four year old students and a primary campus for students aged between five and twelve, with a 2024 enrolment of approximately 370 students across the two campuses.

Hawker School is a unique open plan school. The warm, friendly and inviting atmosphere and positive school culture provides a strong foundation for quality learning, academic excellence and student success in a wide range of areas.

The underpinning philosophy of the school established by the founding principal, Mr Al Leece still thrives today and embraces the loaves and the hyacinths principle in education:

'If thou of fortune be bereft and of thine earthly store hath left, two loaves sell one and with the dole buy hyacinths to feed the soul.'

The loaves are about the core foundation skills: literacy and numeracy and the skills involved in learning. The hyacinths are about passion areas, creativity, curiosity and confidence. It is about happiness and responding to the joy of being alive.

In keeping with this, we provide our students with a significant range of programs including Maths, Literacy, French, Music, Sport, and Mental Health and Wellbeing.

We provide an inclusive and safe environment for children. Students at Hawker School have diverse backgrounds and come from many countries from around the world. We value cultural diversity and enjoy the richness that comes with the many cultures that form our wonderful school community.

Hawker School values the integral role parents and carers play in the education of their children. We have a highly supportive and active parent community who value and support quality programs and high learning outcomes for our students. We welcome involvement and contribution to our school community.

I am honoured to be leading this school community and welcome anyone who is interested in enrolling a child at Hawker School to contact us on 6142 2660 or emailing us at info@hawkerps.act.edu.au.

Year 5 Parliament House Excursion

Our Year 5 students recently had the opportunity to visit Parliament House! During their visit, they participated in a guided tour exploring the Senate and the House of Representatives, gaining firsthand insight into the workings of our democracy.

A highlight of the day was their session with the Parliamentary Education Office, where students became young parliamentarians in a mock debate to pass a bill in the House of Representatives. The proposed bill? That all schools should include three hours of PE every day!

With passionate speeches, clever arguments, and some impressive attempts to sway the crossbench, the "government" secured victory. The bill was passed, to the excitement of the students, who discovered the power of persuasive communication and collaboration.
